Introduction
In the face of unprecedented challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, our 2021 Anti-Epidemic Program rallied together to provide a platform for secondary school students to engage, learn, and empower themselves. Despite the need for online interaction, the program successfully created opportunities for mentorship, discussion, and knowledge sharing.
Venue and Dates
Due to the prevailing pandemic situation, our program was conducted entirely online, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. The journey began with an orientation on March 27th, followed by a series of enlightening seminars on April 3rd, 17th, 28th, and discussion-based learning sessions held on April 10th, 24th, May 15th, and June 5th. The program culminated with a memorable closing ceremony on June 26th, 2021, marking the end of a transformative experience. Continued mentorship extended throughout the program duration, nurturing personal and academic growth.
Participants
With the active involvement of 39 enthusiastic secondary school students, our program fostered 48 mentees and established 48 impactful mentorship pairs. The mentorship relationships provided invaluable guidance, support, and inspiration, enhancing personal growth and academic development.
Discussion Topics
Throughout the program, participants delved into thought-provoking discussions aimed at analyzing the components of a quality education, exploring social factors influencing the quality of education in Hong Kong, brainstorming ways to improve education equity, and identifying obstacles hindering progress. These discussions facilitated critical thinking, deepened understanding, and empowered participants to advocate for positive change in the educational landscape.
For the first time, we invited speakers who have personally experienced educational inequity and have taken remarkable steps to bring about change in society. Their stories served as powerful inspiration, demonstrating to our participants that they too have the potential to become change-makers in their own right.
Guest Speakers
We were honored to host Mr. William Chan, founder of Wave Commerce, who shared his journey of overcoming educational challenges and leveraging technology to empower underprivileged students. Vivian Looi, founder of EdQuity, captivated our participants with her transformative work in providing equal access to quality education. Ms. Bailey Cherry, founder of ReBooked, inspired us with her innovative approach in repurposing books to enhance educational opportunities. Lastly, Ms. Macy Chung, co-founder of HeartlineHK, shared her passion for bridging educational gaps through impactful community initiatives.
Their presence and wisdom left an indelible impression on our participants, igniting a spark of inspiration and empowering them to create positive change within their communities. We are immensely grateful to these distinguished guest speakers for their valuable contributions to our program, as they truly exemplify the spirit of resilience, determination, and the belief that each individual can make a significant impact in addressing educational disparities.
Partnerships
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our esteemed partners for their valuable support and collaboration. The Mongkok Kai-kong Association Limited Chan Hing Social Service Centre played a pivotal role in promoting our program and recruiting primary school participants. The Hong Kong Outstanding Students' Association's support in promoting the program to secondary school students was instrumental in broadening its reach. Additionally, we are grateful to Kids4Kids for their generous sponsorship, enabling us to deliver a successful and impactful program.
Organizing Committee
The program's success was made possible by the unwavering commitment and dedication of our organizing committee members: Daphne Chan, Jamilia To, Charis Ko, and Scotifeld Wong. Their meticulous planning and coordination ensured a seamless and enriching experience for all participants.
Conclusion
As we reflect upon the impactful journey of our 2021 Anti-Epidemic Program, we are inspired by the passion, resilience, and desire for positive change exhibited by our participants.
